Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.
Global terrorist designation and legal charges
Recently, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.
Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for targeting sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.
Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.
Trial details and international connections
Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.
Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.
Regional context and group hierarchy
Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.
Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.
Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.
Previous convictions and international reactions
A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.
America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.
The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.
“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
