New research reveals that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People using these treatments must be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the way of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
