Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.

Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
