Powerful Gales Cause Numerous Homes Without Power in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents advised to avoid going out as strong winds strike the region.

Severe winds attaining velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have caused around 90,000 homes lacking electricity and led officials to call off over 100 air travel services, based on domestic outlets.

The winds are influencing the whole South Island and southern sections of the North Island, as stated by the country's meteorological service.

Officials in New Zealand have released infrequent severe gust advisories - the highest alert level - in key areas encompassing these major districts.

People have been advised to stay indoors, stay off roads, and make arrangements for more electricity and network failures.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Measures

The power cut appears to be affecting homes mainly in the South Island, while officials state that the electricity supply was being gradually reinstated.

Local media have reported that in various locations roofs have been ripped off houses, while power lines and trees have been knocked down by the gusts.

Within the capital, a man was lost his life after being impacted by a wooden fragment at a well-known hiking path on Tuesday.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a woman was swept into approaching vehicles on a road by a powerful blast, in a moment that was recorded in a viral dashcam video.

Aircraft services to and from the metropolis have been suspended due to the gusts, whereas various routes and public facilities are not operating.

Meanwhile local leaders have announced a state of emergency, to assist recovery activities.

Strike Action Amid Severe Conditions

The powerful gales on Thursday come as many of teachers, doctors and other public workers take part in what has been described as a "major walkout", requesting better pay and working conditions.

But the extreme weather has forced them to modify certain arrangements, with several external protests moved indoors or called off.

Comparable winds are impacting the neighboring country, bringing a high-temperature event to the remote areas.

Agencies have announced burning restrictions for fear of forest fires.
