The star has given the entirety of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which works to save the United Kingdom's small live music spots.

The star was presented with the prize on 16 October as his latest record the album was chosen as the best record of the past year.

Fender has decided to give the cash to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the vital role grassroots venues fulfilled in his early career.

"I personally wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it weren't for all the shows I performed around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," remarked the artist. "These spaces are renowned, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these locations have shut down – about 16% of the total UK scene.

Recently, well-known musicians including Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to support the industry, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which goes to help local stages.

Sam Fender also joined in, generating in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to help thirty-eight grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money assisted locations that were confronting potential shutdown due to difficulties stemming from water damage, blazes and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Other venues were granted funding support in upgrading facilities and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted artists and audiences.

"The concept that funds from shows in large arenas supports the independent spots, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just sensible," Fender has stated.

Fender is far from the only musician to donate his award winnings to good deeds.

In the band won the award in the year 1996 for their album Different Class, vocalist Cocker announced that the group would donate their prize money to the non-profit War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer the artist shared her bounty across a few good causes, like the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I gave a thousand pounds to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they required better apparatus," the artist explained to outlets.

In recent years, the band gave their winnings to the local youth club that supported their act, as well as other local music groups.

Also the 1994 recipients M People donated their winnings to a MS organization after a friend was found to have the illness.

"Winning was sufficient," said vocalist Small. "The prize was the cherry on top but we didn't require the extra, because we had the honor. So our victory impacted another person's life."

In the past week, the MVT shared it had saved a couple of small stages in the South East, by placing them under public stewardship.

One venue in the city and the second in that location were bought under the public acquisition program, which is backed by a national body and music fans who buy "ownership units" in the buildings.
